Accessible Science and Social Studies for K-2 Children with Special Needs

Join us for this introductory level workshop introducing Expedition Education, Jr., a science and social studies program for students with disabilities in grades k-2. We will show how science and social studies standards are addressed in tandem with reading comprehension for young children in large group, small group, and individual instructional models. Specific implementation strategies, teacher resources, and differentiated activities will be shared.
Upon Completion of this session, participants will be able to:
Describe how science and social studies instruction benefits language development and reading comprehension.
List 3 evidence-based strategies for reading instruction for students with special needs..
Discuss 3 benefits of fully accessible curriculum.
Explain the importance of differentiating materials at the activity level.

Instructor Bio: Emily Strom, MS LBS1
Emily received her undergraduate in general education, Master's degree in special education, and Learning Behavior Specialist certificate from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She taught for five years in the Chicago Public Schools. She is currently a curriculum and content writer for Tobii Dynavox.
