Beyond Requesting with Communicator 5 and Compass
In this session we will review the four areas of communicative competence (linguistic, social, operational and strategic). We will discuss vocabulary to support a variety of communicative functions such as asking questions and making comments and supporting communication partner strategies. We will review practical ideas and tools to help plan for implementation and goal writing for individuals of various ages, abilities, and communication levels.
• List 3 communicative functions beyond requesting.
• List 2 partner communication strategies that move AAC communicators beyond requesting.
• Outline a plan to teach at least one communicative function to an individual using AAC in an everyday setting.
This course is offered for .1 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional area).

Holly Schneider, MA CCC-SLP, has prior experience as an Elementary & Intermediate English and Language Arts teacher. After graduating in 2000 with a Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology, she began a clinical career at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital, working with clients ranging in age from adolescent to geriatric. Currently, Holly is on the Training and Implementation Team at TobiiDynavox where she develops and conducts internal and customer trainings, creates implementation resources, and presents at local, national and international conferences about AAC topics.
