From Images to Symbols and Beyond: Supporting Autism Using and Customizing Visual Strategies

Training Type: Boardmaker Software Family

Description: When creating a visual support activity it is important to consider what kind of visual strategies will have the most meaning to the student. With Boardmaker Software Family, visual strategies include symbol sets, photos and videos. One misconception is that these visual strategies are inflexible when in fact, photos, symbols and videos can be easily customized to increase the meaningfulness to the student.
This session will begin by introducing a variety of activities that integrate different types of visual strategies and case studies of students who have used visual support activities integrated with meaningful visual strategies. We will then demonstrate how Boardmaker Plus can easily use and customize these visual strategies: symbol sets, photos, and videos. We will explore importing images, converting videos for use in the program, various customization techniques used to create new meaningful symbols and photos, and programming options to customize the use of video for more meaningful implementation. The session will conclude with an overview of and a review of follow-up resources that support information delivered during session, including a practical visual strategy inventory checklist that participants can use during their pre-planning of visual support activities.
