What Our Customers Say
“I look at the way I can carry on conversations with complete strangers who come into my office on campus and go, ‘Wow! How cool was that to actually be able to speak with a complete stranger.”

Jared Armstrong just completed another season as a field manager at Lafayette Woods
Ballpark near his hometown of Houma, Louisiana. He made his usual pre-game rounds
to see that the field was ready, and the players and coaches had the equipment they
needed, just as he's been doing since he started the job in the summer of 1999 after
his graduation from Ellender Memorial High School. But this year, Jared had a new
helper—his DynaWrite communication device. The DynaWrite gives Jared a quick and
easy way to tell co-workers what they need to know. Because of his cerebral palsy,
Jared, 25, is unable to speak in his own voice and moves about in a wheelchair.
The condition also limits his fine motor skills, so he often uses the DynaWrite's
abbreviation expansion feature, which allows him to create and program messages
with just a few keystrokes. With a single keystroke, he can deliver each message.
"The more I use it, the faster I get with it," Jared said of the DynaWrite, which
the Louisiana Rehabilitation Service purchased for him in January 2003 to help him
continue to work. Jared also works for the Salvation Army during the Thanksgiving
and Christmas holidays.
The DynaWrite helps Jared in his efforts to find steady employment. To prepare for
conversations with prospective employers, he programmed his current job responsibilities,
as well as autobiographical information and simple phrases such as "Good Morning"
into the device using its file manager and abbreviation expansion.
Outside of his job-related pursuits, Jared remains industrious. He's a member the
Houma Volunteer Fire Company and People First, a self-advocacy group for adults
with physical and mental challenges. He participates in Special Olympics and is
a huge baseball fan.
The people in Jared's life have a lot to do with his positive attitude and the many
enjoyable opportunities that have come his way.
"My family and friends support me a great deal. They help me to be more independent,"
Jared said. "I am blessed with a wonderful mother, father, brother, sister-in-law
and nephew who think a lot of me. And I have three wonderful personal care attendants."
Jared also is blessed with enthusiasm.
"Just because I am handicapped, it doesn't stop me from doing the things that 'normal'
people do," he said.
