Communication Solutions for Veterans
If you're a veteran with a disability that has left you unable to use speech as your primary method of communication due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, ALS or other condition, then you may be an ideal candidate for a speech-generating device (SGD). Here is information to help you or the family members or professionals that support you get started on the path of exploring the possibilities.

What is a speech-generating device?
A speech device is a form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) that allows a user to type or select a series of words or icons and convert this input into oral communication. Users interact with the device using a touch screen, switch, head or eye-tracking system, depending on the level of motor control.

Who is a candidate for a speech-generating device? Disabilities that may lead to the inability to use speech as a primary method of communication include traumatic brain injury, stroke, ALS, laryngectomy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and a number of other conditions. Although a veteran may be able to communicate basic needs using his natural voice, he may not be able to produce more complex verbal communication. If a veteran's communication has been adversely affected in any way, a speech device or other AAC solution should be considered. |

Contact an SLP through the VA
A speech language pathologist in the VA center will be able to perform an evaluation, determine if a device is appropriate, and make a device recommendation. Things to evaluate include both your current needs and how those needs may change in the future. In addition to your speech needs, you may also want a device to allow you to connect to the internet, talk on the telephone, or control your environment. Your SLP will take all these factors into consideration and be able to recommend a device to meet your current and future needs.
