I'm a parent/caregiver

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a term used to describe a range of communication tools that help individuals affected by significant speech, language and learning disabilities communicate with others. AAC can range from print-based communication boards to speech generating devices. These devices are funded by Medicare, Medicaid, and many private insurance policies, minimizing out-of-pocket costs to the family.

DynaVox, together with Mayer-Johnson, is the worldwide leader in the full range of AAC solutions. We believe that our AAC products are more than just hardware, software and technology. They are a person’s pathway to a world of expression. We’re here to help you and your loved ones on the journey toward successful communication. If you are a parent, caregiver or potential augmented communicator, here is some information to get you started.

How do I know if AAC is appropriate?

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) with experience in AAC will evaluate your loved one to determine which communication device is most appropriate. The following questions will help you consider your loved one’s needs.

Is a communication device appropriate for my loved one?

  • Does the individual have difficulty expressing their wants, needs, feelings, and thoughts in one or more environments?
  • Do you or others have to focus, have background knowledge or ask multiple questions to understand what that person is saying?
  • Does the individual become frustrated when attempting to communicate? Do they sometimes give up?
  • Does the individual understand more than they are able to express?
NEXT STEPS

If you answered 'Yes' to one or more of these questions, it is recommended that you see an SLP who specializes in AAC. The SLP will perform an evaluation, determine if a device is appropriate, and make one or more device recommendations. Your SLP will then work with our team of Funding Representatives to help you receive funding through Medicare, Medicaid or your private insurance company.
