Features:
Despite
their small size, Impact devices support a wide range of state-of-the
art interface methods and augmentative techniques, with an unlimited
spoken vocabulary provided by DECtalk speech synthesis. Selections
can be made via touchscreen, integrated buttons, or external switches.
Onscreen buttons can have letters, phrases, or symbols. Other features
include powerful word prediction (via the Foresight
prediction engine), auto-spacing, auto-capitalization, abbreviation
expansion, keypad disambiguation, auditory selection feedback, and
visual magnification. And that just scratches the surface of Impact's
capabilities. If
you're using any standard Impact (as opposed to a "dedicated
device" Impact-D), you'll also have access to the other applications
on the device - an editor, day minder, contact manager, web browser,
and more.
Symbol Support:
Impact
supports multi-page symbol-based configurations that you can design
either right on the device with the built-in interface editor, or on
your Windows PC with the new PC Editor. As of
July 1, 2003, each new Impact device ships with the full Mayer
Johnson symbol pack, which includes nearly 6,500 core symbols (plus
sign language and black & white symbols). For devices purchased
before this date, the symbol pack (and the extra memory needed to store
the symbols) can be purchased for $250.
Standard
Interfaces:
Each
Impact device ships with a set of augmentative configurations tailored
to the screen size and capabilities of the hardware platform. These
include alphabetic and optimized onscreen keyboards with optional
word prediction, a matrix keyboard without word prediction, a symbol-based
interface, and two "keypad" configurations that combine multiple
letters on larger buttons to make selection easier. For additional
information on the interfaces available on each Impact platform
(including screenshots) please go to the Palmtop3 and Tablet
XL pages.
Add-On
Interfaces:
For
the Tablet XL version of Impact (only), we offer three powerful add-on
configurations for purchase: Velocity, WordPower,
and Picture WordPower. Developed by Christine Scally (MA, CCC-SLP), Velocity is
a symbol-based system targeted at elementary school aged children. WordPower,
developed by Nancy Inman (MS, CCC-SLP) for literate users, combines
a core vocabulary with an onscreen keyboard with word prediction. Picture
WordPower, also developed by Ms. Inman, provides a much larger
symbol-based vocabulary. For Palmtop3 Impact (only), we
offer a version of Velocity, as well as VocabPC,
a powerful symbol-based interface designed by Gail Van Tatenhove (PA,
MS, CCC-SLP).
