The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh Partners with DynaVox Technologies
Partnership to Explore How the Use of Speech Technology Affects Learning for Students with Autism

PITTSBURGH, PA – October 29, 2007 - The Center for Students with Autism, part of The Day School at the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh-based DynaVox Technologies today announced a unique research partnership designed to accelerate learning and increase functional communication for students with autism by combining innovative teaching methods with high-tech speech communication technology.

The Autism Communication Project is a joint initiative to provide students with autism who are also challenged by significant speech disabilities the tools and structure needed to achieve both socially and in the classroom. The Day School employs a range of teaching strategies from the Verbal Behavior Approach to teaching children, a component of the Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. This evidence-based approach to teaching is new to The Day School’s autism program and is designed to help students achieve in a variety of settings. DynaVox Technologies is providing select students, who are unable to communicate effectively due to the effects of autism, with dynamic display, synthesized communication devices. These devices complement current teaching methods and provide a means to communicate in a framework that supports established daily learning activities and encourages participation.

Commenting on this partnership, Bill Bauer, Med, CRC, The Day School director, said, "As leaders in the field of education for students with autism, we're happy to have an opportunity to explore new and promising methods that may benefit our students. Partnering with DynaVox Technologies on this project gives us the chance to work with an organization that has demonstrated consistent interest in thinking 'out of the box' and developing new and better ways for individuals to communicate."

Linnea McAfoose, MA, CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist and clinical product manager at DynaVox Technologies commented, "It’s very exciting to be a part of this project. These students face many challenges, but they also have a lot to offer the world around them. By combining cutting-edge teaching methods with cutting-edge technology, we are providing them the best possible combination of tools to enable learning, communication and achievement."

Expected outcomes of this research project for the students involved include:

  • Increased independence and communication initiation,
  • Increased engagement in the classroom and participation in learning activities,
  • Improved social communication at school, home, and in other settings,
  • Increased rate of communication, and
  • Increased ability to manage environmental changes and support successful communication to reduce challenging behaviors.

"We are delighted to be working with The Day School at the Children’s Institute on this project," said Jim Shea, vice president of marketing at DynaVox Technologies. "The ongoing research will not only be a great help to the students involved and their families, but the results will, hopefully, accelerate the development of comprehensive teaching and learning tools tailored specifically to the autism population and help a greater number of students in the coming years."

AAC Researchers and DynaVox Co-Develop Communication Solutions for Individuals Affected by Aphasia and Traumatic Brain Injury
Technology Transfer Project Provides Powerful Communication Framework Using Visual Scene Displays

PITTSBURGH, PA – MAY 4, 2007 - DynaVox Technologies today announced the release of the Visual Scene Display communication framework for adults affected by aphasia and traumatic brain injury (TBI) using the company’s popular V and Vmax speech-output solutions. Developed under the leadership of Dr. David Beukelman, PhD, of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, and in collaboration with the Augmentative and Alternative Communication-Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (AAC-RERC), this new communication framework presents contextually rich visual images to represent meaning and support page navigation. Commonly occurring as the result of stroke, traumatic brain injury and transient ischemic attack, aphasia is the loss of previously learned communication skills resulting from damage to the language centers and their connections in the brain.

Part of a powerful communication strategy that depicts people, activities and objects in relation to one another, the Visual Scene Displays represent familiar situations, places or experiences in which all elements work to present a framework for conversation. This solution reduces the need to navigate between pages to retrieve vocabulary, thereby improving the communication experience. New, contextually meaningful, custom photographs can easily be added to the framework to provide the individual with even greater meaning and familiarity.

"In the past, AAC devices were often used by individuals with aphasia or TBI for specific communication activities such as answering the telephone and basic communication functions such as greetings, prayers, jokes, etc.," said Dr. Beukelman. "The Visual Scene Display framework provides a more robust communication experience and a more complete level of interaction support by allowing these individuals to navigate through the display and communicate messages using personal, contextual images rather than line drawings or icons."

Dr. Beukelman continued: "The digital photographs included in a Visual Scene Display provide a shared communication environment for individuals using AAC technology and their listeners. Using personally relevant pictures with associated text, they can co-construct messages and share socially relevant information."

"For the first time, individuals using advanced speech-output solutions challenged by communication disabilities resulting from aphasia and traumatic brain injury can take advantage of a powerful communication strategy grounded in solid clinical research," said Linnea McAfoose, MA, CCC-SLP, clinical product manager at DynaVox Technologies. "The Visual Scene Display - Adult communication framework gives those working to overcome the effects of these conditions a powerful base for meaningful communication and unprecedented flexibility for adding new content that is truly meaningful to their lives."

The Visual Scene Display – Adult framework is available exclusively on the DynaVox V and Vmax speech-output products, and is offered free-of-charge. Current V and Vmax customers who wish to add these pages to their device should contact DynaVox Technologies’ Technical Support Team at 1-866-DYNAVOX and request a v1.02 Update CD. All new V and Vmax products purchased after May 1, 2007 will include software version 1.02 and the Visual Scene Display – Adult framework. To learn more, visit www.dynavoxtech.com.

ABC News Highlights Assistive Technology on Popular Program
DynaVox Technologies’ Series 5 Speech-Output Solution Featured Product

PITTSBURGH, PA – MARCH 1, 2007 - David Dikter, executive director of the Assistive Technology Industry Association, recently appeared in a segment titled "Technology to Aid the Disabled" on ABC News Now’s Ahead of the Curve program. In keeping with the ATIA’s mission of promoting the use and awareness of assistive technology, Mr. Dikter highlighted an array of technologies that demonstrate the dramatic effects that assistive technology can have on the lives of those with disabilities.

In addition to products for those with visual disabilities, the new DynaVox V speech-output device was featured. "The assistive technology industry is at a crossroad where it is being challenged by people who expect that a particular technology exists, but do not know where to find that technology," said Jim Shea, DynaVox Technologies’ vice-president of marketing. "Mr. Dikter’s appearance on Ahead of the Curve, and the activities of the ATIA, help bridge the gap between expectation and knowledge. We are proud to have had our product selected to be part of this story."

"The power of assistive technologies changes lives and we need more press and media attention to accentuate this," said Mr. Dikter of his appearance on Ahead of the Curve. "One of the biggest challenges facing assistive technologies is awareness and building a global understanding that people with disabilities have far more capacity to learn, work and function beyond what most people assume."

DynaVox Acquires Mayer-Johnson and Separates from Sunrise Medical Independent Entity Provides Comprehensive Product Offerings

PITTSBURGH, PA - May 17, 2004 - DynaVox Systems LLC, the world's leading provider of advanced augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) solutions, today announced that it has acquired Mayer-Johnson, Inc. of San Diego, CA, creating a family of companies with the world's broadest product menus for children and adults with speech, language and learning disabilities.

Simultaneously, Sunrise Medical Inc. of Carlsbad, CA, announced its separation of DynaVox Systems LLC into an independent, stand-alone entity, paving the way for DynaVox to operate autonomously in the AAC industry.

DynaVox and Mayer-Johnson design, develop, produce and distribute personal communication systems and instructional tools for those with speech, language and learning disabilities due to the effects of autism, Down syndrome, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, and a variety of other diagnoses.

"For more than 20 years, Mayer-Johnson has provided critical tools to those challenged by speech, language and physical disabilities and those caregivers who support them," said DynaVox President and CEO Joe Swenson. "Together, we can provide a broad spectrum of tools to enable all individuals challenged by speech and physical disabilities to live richer, fuller lives."

"The management team is looking forward to guiding DynaVox autonomously. We see great opportunities to expand our product and service offerings to better meet the varied needs of the disability community," Swenson added. "Additionally, we are grateful for the support that we have received from Sunrise Medical through the years. This support allowed DynaVox to grow significantly and touch the lives of many more people challenged by speech and language disabilities."

Mayer-Johnson is the developer of the Picture Communication Symbols (PCS), a popular, comprehensive communication system used by children and adults with speech, language and learning disabilities around the world. The company's software offerings include BoardMaker, a flexible platform that can be used to create any symbol-based material, and Speaking Dynamically Pro, a communication and instructional program that provides interactive voice activities. Mayer-Johnson also supplies many instructional and literacy tools used by individuals with special needs, and accessibility products for those with physical disabilities. This slate of products complements the higher-tech, more advanced communication devices and software produced by DynaVox.

"We are pleased and proud to be part of the DynaVox family," said Terry Johnson, Mayer-Johnson's president and co-founder. "Mayer-Johnson and DynaVox are a great fit because the companies serve the special needs community in different ways. Mayer-Johnson produces computer software, hardware and books used by professionals and parents, and DynaVox provides high-technology communication devices for AAC users."

Mayer-Johnson will function as a division of DynaVox Systems LLC and will maintain operations and staffing in San Diego. Mr. Johnson will continue to lead ?ayer-Johnson's operations. New responsibilities for Mr. Johnson and his team at Mayer-Johnson will include working with the DynaVox management and research and development teams to leverage Mayer-Johnson's products and capabilities within DynaVox. Roxie Johnson, co-founder of Mayer-Johnson, will continue with the company in a consulting role.

In January of this year, DynaVox Systems LLC acquired Enkidu Research of Brookfield, WI. Enkidu developed and distributed high-tech AAC products supported by aggressive applied research efforts. Enkidu's operations have been successfully integrated into DynaVox's operations, and company principles are continuing their work as part of DynaVox's research and development team. The Enkidu and DynaVox product lines currently exist as separate lines under the umbrella of DynaVox Systems LLC.

Vestar Capital Partners and Park Avenue Equity Partners are providing equity financing for the transaction. Sunrise Medical Inc. will retain a meaningful stake in the "new" DynaVox.

"We're delighted to be re-investing in Joe Swenson and the management team at DynaVox," said James L. Elrod, Jr., a managing director with Vestar and head of the firm's healthcare investment group. "We look forward to the company's progress as the leading provider of technology and products in the augmentative and alternative communication market."

DynaVox Systems LLC Acquires Enkidu Research, Inc. Industry Leaders Join Forces to Develop Better Communication Solutions

PITTSBURGH, PA - JANUARY 14, 2004 - DynaVox Systems, the world's leading provider of advanced augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) solutions, today announced that it has acquired Enkidu Research, Inc. Enkidu Research develops AAC technologies supported by aggressive applied research efforts.

"We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Enkidu," said Joe Swenson, DynaVox Systems' president. "The integration of Enkidu's human and technological resources into DynaVox Systems' operations will allow us to deliver better communication solutions to those with significant speech disabilities much more quickly."

Enkidu co-founders, Dr. Gregory Lesher and Bryan Moulton, and their partner, Bob Geenen, will assume critical roles as directors on the DynaVox Systems' research and development team. Enkidu's long-time research collaborator, Dr. Jeff Higginbotham of the State University of New York at Buffalo, will work with DynaVox Systems in a consulting role. This group will continue to focus their efforts on applied research and the integration of research results into new and existing products.

Additional terms of the sale include:

  • Continued availability of Enkidu products - DynaVox Systems will carry current Enkidu products as a separate brand under the DynaVox Systems name.
  • Increased level of support - Current and future Enkidu product communicators will be able to tap into DynaVox Systems' extensive network of support services that includes funding assistance, sales support, expanded technical phone support hours, access to answers 24/7 at DynaVox Systems' on-line Knowledge Base and additional training opportunities.
  • Trusted relationships remain intact - Enkidu customers will continue to receive service from the Enkidu representatives that they have come to know and trust.

"Enkidu has been successful by bringing quality AAC devices to market quickly through the use of applied research. However, it's difficult for a company the size of Enkidu to provide the high level of support that users of AAC technology deserve," said Lesher. "We were looking for a way to extend the services we could provide and get our products to more people that need them. Becoming part of the DynaVox team will allow that to happen quickly."
