Language Application Helps AAC Users Acquire Communication Skills for Self-Advocacy
PITTSBURGH, PA - May 8, 2006 - DynaVox Technologies today announced
the launch of Communicate 4. A comprehensive language application program, Communicate
4 provides vocabularies that allow adults and youth with physical disabilities using
DynaVox Series 4 speech-output devices to direct daily personal routines and participate
in common community-based situations.
Communicate 4 was developed by Barbara Collier, speech-language pathologist, Paul
Janzen, technologist, and Susie Blackstein-Adler, occupational therapist with extensive
input from adults who use AAC, direct attendant services and live in the community.
Ideal for youth in transition to adulthood and adults with reduced access to clinical
services, Communicate 4:
- Provides preprogrammed vocabulary and access to novel message generation.
- Incorporates researched vocabulary lists.
- Provides a foundation for customization and expansion.
- Supports people learning how to communicate in a range of contexts.
- Fosters self-determination.
Communicate 4 includes:
- More than 9,000 context-based words and phrases.
- Researched single-word vocabularies.
- Links to predicted vocabularies.
- More than 250 preprogrammed pages and popups.
- Phrases and sentences related to 26 communication contexts.
- 100+ single-word vocabulary lists associated with communication contexts.
- Templates and instructions for documenting individualized attendant service plans.
- Generic phrases for quick-talk such as greetings, responses, etiquette, etc.
- Phrases for regulating behaviors and conversations.
