Hi,
I'm a speech pathologist working with children with physical impairment in Australia. I just thought I would post to see if anyone else is experiencing the same amount of frustration with the limitations of the M3 when compared to the Mighty/ MiniMos as I am.

For the students I work with keyguards and specific row/column positions for access are essential. This makes InterAACT very difficult to work with. Even with InterAACT, the M3 doesn't come with recordings, so the time consuming process of recording onto each and every cell is very frustrating for students, teachers, parents and SPs. The device was advertised as having the features of the MightyMo but the size discrepency is enormous and there are no Gateway pages that can be downloaded to the device.

In places where speech generation is fully or mostly funded then it would be easy- I would recommend the V or the Vmax. Where I work, the funding does not cover even a quarter of the cost of these devices, so the cheaper options meant that more families and students could access good quality dynamic display devices without having to fundraise for up to 12 months before purchasing. I am going to find it very difficult to recommend the M3 and find myself considering products that I haven't considered as high quality in the past.

If anyone else is experiencing these dilemas and has found a solution to them then please let me know. I wish that Dynavox would release the Gateway Jumpstart page sets and recordings for the M3 and I also wish that they would release the InterAACT recordings (even to purchase).

Looking forward to hearing some solutions,
Kaely

Hi Kaely,

I'm Bob Butcher one of the Product Managers at DynaVox. I am hoping to provide answers and some solutions to the questions and issues you are having with the M3.

In regards to keyguards and the M3 InterAACT pages I'm assuming you are talking about the use of Visual Scenes and the keyguard. The grid based pages do work with the standard title-bar keyguards, and we recommend that with a little work you can position the active areas of a visual scene to be accessible from the keyguard "holes".

Next I'd like to talk about recorded voices and the recording process on the M3. From a recording standpoint, DynaVox has greatly improved the process for creating recordings on the M3 compared to the Mini/Mighty Mo.

With that being said I do understand time constraints for parents and teachers and I have both a right now and longer term answer for you. Right now the M3 ships with a CD that includes all of the DynaVox created Mini/Might Mo content and professionally recorded voices. You have the ability to load those packages to the M3 and take advantage of the content and pre-recorded voices that you are already familiar with. As a longer term solution for customers who will be using the InterAACT pages, DynaVox is investigating the possibility of recording male, female and child voices for the InterAACT M3 page sets.

In terms of including Gateway pagesets, when we were designing this product and the content for the product we looked at Gateway and made a decision that these pagesets did not fit into the language strategy/framework we defined for the M3. We really wanted to focus in on the Emergent Communicator and Gateway doesn't fit into this strategy.

I hope this answers your concerns. If you would like to talk in more detail or need to contact me directly my email address is: bob.butcher@dynavoxtech.com

Thanks,

Bob

As a parent I don't mind spending time to customise, make recordings, add symbols etc. What annoys me is these stupid Scene picture pages - they are so limiting choice wise and totally inappropriate to my daughter's life. For a cognitively normal 2.5 year old we've ended up skipping the child programme going straight to adult and I've spent an hour making a cardboard keyguard?????
