Intellectual Disability FAQs

Common questions about using high-tech AAC for individuals with intellectual disability.

Will a speech device impede my child's natural ability to speak?
Extensive research has proven that AAC can actually benefit children by enhancing their communication and supporting development of language and literacy skills. In many cases, AAC may, in fact, facilitate the production of speech. (Millar, Light & Schlosser, 2006). With AAC, individuals are engaged in the process of learning as they receive visual and auditory feedback and reinforcement from the device. Voice output has been found to have a positive impact on literacy skills, question response, comment sharing, object labeling and requesting (Beukelman & Mirenda, 2005).
How will an AAC device help my loved one or client?
AAC devices have many benefits for individuals with intellectual disability. By allowing the individual to effectively communicate with those around him, the AAC device can help the individual by increasing independence and self-confidence, and reducing overall frustration and negative behaviors.
Will an AAC device prevent my loved one or client from speaking?
No. An AAC device does not replace the other ways in which an individual might communicate; it merely enhances or augments existing communication by replacing only those elements that are unintelligible. The AAC device helps to bridge any communication gaps that an individual may experience.
When is the right time to get an AAC device?
It is never too early or too late to investigate AAC device options. The earlier that the AAC device is introduced the earlier the individual can begin learning how to use it and reap the benefits that it provides. AAC devices can be used successfully by anyone regardless of age!
How do I select the most appropriate communication device?
A speech-language pathologist (SLP) will perform an evaluation to determine if an AAC device is appropriate. As part of the evaluation, the SLP will compare a variety of AAC devices to determine those which will best meet the individual's immediate and future communication and access needs. Your SLP may suggest that you trial several different devices before a final decision is made.
How are AAC devices paid for?
AAC devices can be paid for in a variety of ways. Many people turn to Medicare, Medicaid or their private health insurance providers. Others turn to not-for-profit organizations to help pay AAC devices for individuals who do not qualify for or do not have access to funding. Since funding varies by state, DynaVox helps individuals and families with the funding process by assigning a funding specialist who is knowledgeable about your state's specific funding requirements. Your funding specialist will assist you throughout the funding process. To learn more visit our funding section or call 1-866-DYNAVOX.
How can we ensure success with an AAC device?
To ensure success with an AAC device, you should be supported by an integrated team of family members, caregivers and clinicians. Team members may include a spouse, adult children, other family members and friends, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), assistive technology (AT) specialists and physicians. Each of these team members brings specialized knowledge and expertise to the situation. This collaboration is important to the overall effectiveness of the AAC device. Generally the SLP will take the lead role in integrating the device into the individual's therapy program. She may also assist with programming the device and working with you and other members of your team to ensure familiarity with functions and operation.
