ALS FAQs

Common questions about using high-tech AAC with individuls with ALS.

How will an AAC device help me?
AAC devices have many benefits for individuals with ALS. They allow the person to efficiently communicate, maintain independence and employment, increase self-confidence and reduce frustration.
Will an AAC device replace the other ways in which I communicate?
No. An AAC device merely enhances or augments existing communication by replacing only those elements that are unintelligible.
When is the right time to get an AAC device?
It is important to begin exploring AAC device options early in the diagnosis. This will allow you to explore many options without feeling as if a decision must be made immediately!
How do I select the most appropriate communication device?
A speech-language pathologist (SLP) will perform an evaluation to determine if an AAC device is appropriate. As part of the evaluation, the SLP will compare a variety of AAC devices to determine those which will best meet your immediate and future communication and access needs. Your SLP may suggest that you trial several different devices before a final decision is made.
How are AAC devices paid for?
AAC devices can be paid for in a variety of ways. Many people turn to Medicare, Medicaid or their private health insurance providers. Military veterans may look to the Veterans’ Administration for funding. Others turn to not-for-profit organizations that work to provide AAC devices for individuals who do not qualify for or have access to funding. DynaVox assigns a funding specialist to assist you throughout the funding process.
How can we ensure success with an AAC device?
To ensure success with an AAC device, you should be supported by an integrated team of family members, caregivers and clinicians. Team members may include a spouse, adult children, other family members and friends, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), assistive technology (AT) specialists and physicians. Each of these team members brings specialized knowledge and expertise to the situation. This collaboration is important to the overall effectiveness of the AAC device. Generally the SLP will take the lead role in integrating the device into the individual’s therapy program. She may also assist with programming the device and work with you and other members of your team to ensure familiarity with functions and operation.
Do I or does someone on the care team have to be a technology expert to be successful with an AAC device?
No. DynaVox’s team of dedicated professionals is available to assist you every step of the way. At DynaVox, we believe that our products are more than just hardware and software; rather our technologies are an individual’s pathway to a world of expression.
